Welcome, and thank you for your interest in our PADI Divemaster course in beautiful Port Douglas! At ABC Dive and Snorkel Charters, where the vibrant reef meets the lush rainforest, we are proud to be a Five Star PADI Instructor Development Centre.

Prerequisites

  • Minimum Age: 18 years*
  • Certification: PADI Rescue Diver (or qualifying certification)
  • Emergency Training: Emergency First Response Primary and Secondary Care training (or qualifying certification) within the last 24 months
  • Dives: 40 logged dives (60 logged dives required for certification)
  • Medical Clearance: Medically evaluated and cleared for diving by a physician within the past 12 months

Note: Divers who are younger than 18 years old but at least 15 years old may enroll in the PADI Junior Divemaster program.

  • PADI Junior Divemaster is a subset of the PADI Divemaster course.
  • PADI Junior Divemaster candidates may complete a significant portion of the PADI Divemaster course, but additional training is required when they turn 18 years old.

About the PADI Divemaster Course

As a PADI Divemaster candidate, you will learn to demonstrate scuba diving skills to others and, once proficient, assist individuals who need extra help to continue with their class. This applies to Open Water Diver Course students all the way through to Divemaster Candidates, providing a broad scope for utilizing your diving skills.

You will enhance your diving knowledge in key areas relevant to a career in the dive industry, including:

  • Diving Physics
  • Diving Physiology
  • Diving Equipment
  • Skills & Environment
  • The RDP (Table & eRDPml)

These subjects may seem intimidating at first, but as you progress and apply them to your diving activities, they become more manageable. You will also learn to manage both training and non-training diving activities, gaining invaluable experience that deepens your understanding and enjoyment of diving.

The course includes a stamina test, which covers:

  • Swimming
  • Snorkeling
  • Treading water
  • Full scuba surface swim

You will need to practice beforehand to achieve a passing score. This session also includes a problem-solving exercise that is both challenging and fun.

During your PADI Divemaster Course, you will complete a traineeship where you assist with Open Water Diver Courses, Continuing Education Courses, and supervising certified divers. This includes:

  • Confined and open-water portions of courses
  • Pre-dive activities
  • Classroom setup
  • Assistance during sessions

Ideally, this traineeship involves real students, but sometimes role-playing sessions are used to provide you with the necessary experience.

PADI Divemaster Duties

As an Active Status PADI Divemaster, you are authorized to:

  1. Supervise training and non-training-related activities: Plan, organize, and direct dives.
  2. Assist an instructor: Help during confined and open water training.
  3. Guide Open Water Diver course students: Lead the tour portion of Open Water Dives 2, 3, and 4 at a 2:1 ratio, under the instructor’s indirect supervision.
  4. Accompany Open Water Diver students: Supervise surface swims to and from entry/exit points and navigational exercises under the instructor’s indirect supervision; supervise remaining students when the instructor conducts a skill.
  5. Accompany student divers: Assist during Adventure Dives or Specialty Course dives under the instructor’s indirect supervision.
  6. Teach and certify PADI Advanced Snorkelers (Skin Divers) independently: This includes conducting the PADI Seal Team Aqua-mission: Skin Diver Specialist.
  7. Conduct the Discover Snorkeling program.
  8. Conduct subsequent dives for Discover Scuba Diving participants: Supervise at a 2:1 ratio after participants complete the first dive with an instructor.
  9. Conduct the Discover Local Diving experience.
  10. Conduct the ReActivate program: Refresh skills for certified divers.
  11. Teach advanced snorkeling skills: Conduct this segment during confined water dives 2, 3, 4, or 5 of the Open Water Diver course.
  12. Lead Discover Scuba Diving: Independently conduct Discover Scuba Diving in a pool or confined open water for participants not doing the optional open water dive (if qualified as a Discover Scuba Diving Leader).
  13. Accompany certified PADI Scuba Divers on subsequent dives.
  14. Conduct specialty courses after completing instructor training and earning the Specialty Instructor rating:
    • Digital Underwater Photographer specialty courses under the direction of a PADI Instructor
    • Specialty courses that don’t include dives

eLearning or Classroom Sessions (Old-School Learners)

eLearning: Online learning makes it easy to fit the PADI Divemaster course into your busy schedule and complete the knowledge development sections whenever and wherever it is convenient for you. Work at your own pace, online or offline, using a computer or mobile device.

At Our Pool and Class Facility:

  • Review: We review your eLearning results to ensure you understand the material.
  • Practice Rescue Techniques: Spend time in the pool practicing rescue techniques until you are comfortable.
  • Scuba Skills: Practice all 29 scuba skills, using technology to help you achieve demonstration quality.
  • Workshops: Engage in fun and informative workshops, including snorkeling, Discover Scuba Diving (DSD) in confined water, and problem-solving for Open Water Diver course students.

eLearning Time Commitment: 8 – 12 hours

This flexible approach ensures you receive comprehensive training while accommodating your busy schedule. Join us to advance your diving skills and knowledge, and become a confident and competent PADI Divemaster!

Scuba Equipment

Standard Diver Equipment:

  • Fins, Mask, and Snorkel: Snorkel should be attached to the mask.
  • Compressed Gas Cylinder and Valve
  • Buoyancy Control Device (BCD)
  • Primary Regulator and Alternate Air Source
  • Breathing Gas Monitoring Device: Submersible Pressure Gauge (SPG)
  • Depth Monitoring Device
  • Quick Release Weight System and Weights
  • Adequate Exposure Protection: Wetsuit or drysuit as needed for the environment
  • Audible Emergency Surface Signaling Device: Whistle, air horn, etc.
  • Dive Computer or RDP (eRDPml or Table)

Standard Instructor and Certified Assistant Equipment

As a PADI Divemaster, you will need the following equipment to effectively perform your duties:

  • Time Monitoring Device: Capable of timing 30 seconds and 60 seconds
  • Compass
  • Knife/Diver’s Tool
  • Two Surface Signaling Devices: One audible (e.g., whistle, air horn) and one visible (e.g., signal mirror, SMB)
  • Dive Flag
  • Instructions for Use: Dive computer or RDP Table/eRDPml

You will need this equipment to enable you to work as a PADI Divemaster. We can assist you in our retail store, or organize rental equipment at an additional cost. Ensure you have all necessary gear before the start of your PADI Divemaster Course. If you have any questions or need assistance, our team is here to help!

PADI 5 Star Instructor Development Centre

Learning to dive at a PADI 5 Star Instructor Development Centre ensures you receive top-quality instruction and facilities for your PADI Divemaster Diver course. Upon certification, you will receive a prestigious “Black” certification card (professional level).
