Your Mission

There is a bit of learning coming your way, so make sure to complete all the eLearning before the start of your IDC Staff Instructor program. Otherwise, you’ll find yourself catching up and preparing assignments each evening.

The IDC Staff Instructor program is only 2 days, plus auditing an entire IDC of 9 days, so your organization and commitment are crucial to your success as a PADI IDC Staff Instructor.

Prepare diligently and stay focused to make the most of this transformative journey and to effectively support and mentor the next generation of PADI Instructors!

Your Learning

During the two-day program, you will undergo evaluation training to learn how to effectively and consistently evaluate teaching presentations and offer positive critiques for knowledge development, confined water, and open water teaching presentations.

You will also participate in knowledge development sessions covering the following topics:

  • IDC Staff Instructor Course Orientation
  • Instructor Development Standards, Procedures, and Curriculum
  • How to Organize and Conduct the PADI Assistant Instructor Course
  • The Psychology of Evaluation and Counseling

This comprehensive training will equip you with the skills and knowledge needed to mentor and support the next generation of PADI Instructors, ensuring they uphold the highest standards of diving education.

Before You Can Start

To begin your IDC Staff Instructor program, you need to meet the following prerequisites:

  • Teaching Status PADI Instructor: You must hold a current teaching status.
  • PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer: You need to be certified as a PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer.
  • Emergency First Response Instructor: You must be an Emergency First Response Instructor.
  • Adherence to PADI Standards: Agree to conduct all PADI certification courses and experience programs using methods consistent with PADI Standards and philosophy as outlined in the PADI Instructor Manual, PADI’s Guide to Teaching, and the PADI Course Director Manual.
  • Use of the PADI System: Agree to use the PADI System and its components in their entirety.

Ensure you have all these prerequisites fulfilled before starting your IDC Staff Instructor program to maximize your training and success in mentoring future PADI Instructors.

Performance Requirements

To successfully complete the IDC Staff Instructor program, you need to meet the following performance requirements:

Exams:

  • Score 80% on each of the Dive Theory Exams.
  • Score 80% on the PADI Systems, Standards, and Procedures Exam

Skill Evaluation:

  • Score a total of 96 points, with no individual skill score less than 3.0.

Teaching Presentations:

  • Score at least 4.0 on a Knowledge Development Teaching Presentation.
  • Score at least 4.0 on a Confined Water Teaching Presentation.

IDC Audit:

  • Audit a complete IDC by observing all required IDC Curriculum sections.

Evaluation Scoring:

  • Meet evaluation scoring parameters for candidate presentations, including:
      • Knowledge Development Teaching Presentation
      • Confined Water Teaching Presentations
      • Open Water Teaching Presentations

Meeting these performance requirements will ensure you are well-prepared to support and evaluate PADI Instructor candidates effectively. Focus on these goals to maximize your success in the IDC Staff Instructor program.

IDC Staff Instructor Duties

As a teaching status, updated IDC Staff Instructor, you are authorized to:

Independently Teach and Certify PADI Assistant Instructors:

  • At PADI Five Star Dive Centers or PADI Five Star Dive Resorts.

Conduct IDC Training Segments:

  • While the PADI Course Director is available on premises for consultation.

Evaluate and Critique:

  • Instructor candidate knowledge development, confined water, and open water teaching presentations.

Provide Counseling and Remedial Training:

  • For instructor candidates and IDC Staff Instructor candidates.

Assist with Training:

  • During instructor-level continuing education programs.

Observe:

  • The orientation and closing sessions of PADI Instructor Examinations.

These duties ensure that you play a crucial role in shaping and mentoring future PADI Instructors, maintaining high standards of diving education, and supporting the continuous development of dive professionals.

Scuba Equipment

Standard Diver Equipment:

  • Fins, Mask, and Snorkel: Snorkel should be attached to the mask.
  • Compressed Gas Cylinder and Valve
  • Buoyancy Control Device (BCD)
  • Primary Regulator and Alternate Air Source
  • Breathing Gas Monitoring Device: Submersible Pressure Gauge (SPG)
  • Depth Monitoring Device
  • Quick Release Weight System and Weights
  • Adequate Exposure Protection: Wetsuit or drysuit as needed for the environment
  • Audible Emergency Surface Signaling Device: Whistle, air horn, etc.
  • Dive Computer or RDP (eRDPml or Table)

Standard Instructor and Certified Assistant Equipment

As an instructor, you will need the following equipment to perform your duties effectively:

  • Time Monitoring Device: Capable of timing 30 seconds and 60 seconds
  • Compass
  • Knife/Diver’s Tool
  • Two Surface Signaling Devices: One audible (e.g., whistle, air horn) and one visible (e.g., signal mirror, SMB)
  • Dive Flag
  • Instructions for Use: Dive computer or RDP Table/eRDPml

You will need this equipment to work as an instructor. We can assist you in our retail store or arrange rental equipment at an extra cost. Ensure you have all the necessary gear before the start of your IDC to be well-prepared for your training and future teaching responsibilities.
